'Lady Marmalade' to headline music festival

July 15, 2015

“Lady Marmalade” - Patti LaBelle - will bring her signature R&B sound to Bankers Life Fieldhouse Saturday night.

The Godmother of Soul is scheduled to headline the Music Heritage Festival II with The Isley Brothers at 8 p.m. This will be the second night of the two-part concert event during Indiana Black Expo’s Summer Celebration.

Grammy award-winning singer Patti LaBelle began performing in the late 1950’s and released her first singles in 1962 with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. The group released its first album – Sweethearts of the Apollo – in 1963.

The group, which later shortened its name to LaBelle, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975 with its song “Lady Marmalade;” the song reached No. 1 a second time in 2001 when Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Pink recorded a cover of it for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. LaBelle reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time as a solo artist Feb. 27, 2013.

In July 1975 LaBelle and her group became the first African-American vocal group featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Recently, LaBelle played the role of Dora in four episodes of American Horror Story: Freakshow in 2014, and competed on season 20 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

The Isley Brothers have been making audiences want to throw their hands up and “shout” since their days as Motown artists. Their instantly recognizable single Shout was made famous when it was featured in the movie Animal House, but it barely broke into the top 50 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was released in 1959.

The Isley Brothers collaborated with Jimi Hendrix during the mid 1960’s to record Testify. Hendrix played the song live with the group for a few performances before leaving to perform as a solo artist.

El DeBarge will open for Patti LaBelle and the Isley Brothers.

Tickets start at $40 and can be purchased from, Bankers Life Fieldhouse box office or Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.
